Sorrento's Nearest Coastal Dental Practice
Five minutes north along West Coast Drive. A small practice where you see the same dentist each visit, rather than whoever is rostered on — which matters more than most people realise when the work you need takes more than one appointment.
Continuity Is the Whole Point of a Small Practice
There is a reason so many Sorrento patients arrive having left a larger corporate clinic. In a practice with six or eight rotating dentists, your file follows you but the judgement does not. One dentist watches a small shadow on an x-ray for two years and decides it is stable; the next sees it fresh and fills it. One thinks a cracked molar can be monitored; the next crowns it. Neither is being dishonest — they simply have no memory of the tooth.
In a small practice the person looking at the x-ray this year is the person who took the last one. That changes the conversation. Instead of a snapshot judgement, you get a comparison: this crack has not moved in three years, so we keep watching; this recession has gone from one millimetre to three, so we act now. Most of good dentistry is knowing what has changed, and you cannot know that if you have never met the tooth before.
It also changes what happens with cosmetic work, which is where Sorrento patients most often come to us. Veneers, whitening and aligner treatment are judgement calls about your face, not just your teeth. Getting the shade, the edge line and the proportions right takes a dentist who has looked at you smiling and talking, more than once, and who will still be there in five years when something needs adjusting.
Most of good dentistry is knowing what has changed — and you cannot know that if you have never met the tooth before.
What Actually Differs Between Practices
Worth knowing before you choose anywhere — including us. These are the questions we would ask if we were the patient.
| What matters | What you often get | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Who treats you | Whichever dentist is rostered that day | The same dentist each visit |
| Treatment plans | Verbal, decided in the chair | Written, with item numbers, before you commit |
| Second opinions | Discouraged | Encouraged — take the plan and the x-rays elsewhere |
| Cosmetic work | Straight to veneers | Whitening and alignment considered first where they will do |
| Recall interval | Six months for everyone | Set by your actual risk after the exam |
| Parking | A shopping centre car park | Free, off-street, at the door |
Cosmetic Work, Done in the Right Order
The most common mistake in cosmetic dentistry is starting at the most invasive option. We work up, not down.
01Start With Whitening
For a lot of people the complaint is colour, not shape, and whitening solves it without touching the tooth. Professional in-chair or custom take-home trays lift most naturally yellowed teeth several shades. It is reversible, it is the cheapest option, and it tells us the true baseline shade before any permanent work is planned.
02Then Consider Alignment or Bonding
Slightly crowded or rotated front teeth can often be moved with clear aligners rather than covered with porcelain. Small chips and gaps can be closed with composite bonding in a single visit, with no drilling of healthy enamel. Both preserve the tooth, which is the whole game.
03Veneers Only Where They Earn It
Veneers are excellent for teeth that are genuinely misshapen, heavily filled, or discoloured from the inside where whitening cannot reach. They are permanent — enamel is removed and cannot be put back — so they should be the answer to a question the simpler options could not solve, not the opening move.
What Patients Tell Us
I had been quoted for eight veneers at another practice. Here I was talked into whitening and two composite repairs first, and told to come back in a year if I still wanted more. A year later I did not.
Same dentist for six years now. He knows which tooth I broke skiing in 2019 without opening the file, and that is worth more than the free coffee at the last place.
Broke a molar on a Thursday night, was seen Friday morning with a temporary crown on before the weekend. That is the entire reason we moved the family here.
Sorrento Patient Questions
How much do veneers cost, and why will nobody quote over the phone?
Because the number depends on things we cannot see down a phone line: how many teeth, whether they need alignment first, whether existing fillings have to be replaced, and whether your bite would destroy the porcelain within a year. Any practice that quotes a firm per-tooth figure before examining you is either guessing or planning to revise it later. Come in for a consultation, get a written plan with item numbers, and take it away to compare. That is the only quote worth having.
Will whitening work on my teeth?
It depends on why they are dark. Yellowing from age, coffee, tea and red wine responds well — most people get several shades. Grey tones from tetracycline exposure in childhood respond poorly. A single dark tooth after an old knock is usually a dead nerve, which needs internal treatment rather than external whitening. And existing crowns, veneers and white fillings will not change colour at all, so if you whiten around them they will suddenly look wrong. We check all of that before you spend anything.
Are clear aligners as good as braces?
For mild to moderate crowding, spacing and rotation of the front teeth — the typical adult case — they are genuinely comparable, and far easier to live with. For significant bite correction, impacted teeth or major skeletal discrepancies, fixed braces or an orthodontist referral is the right answer and we will say so. The catch with aligners is compliance: they need 20 to 22 hours a day. If you are the kind of person who will leave them out through dinner and a night out, they will not work, and it is better to know that before you start.
I grind my teeth. Should I get a night guard from the chemist?
The chemist versions are boil-and-bite and they are a poor idea for grinding specifically, because they are soft. A soft guard gives your jaw something pleasant to chew on and can make clenching worse. A properly made night guard is hard acrylic, made from a scan of your teeth, designed to let the jaw slide rather than lock. It protects your enamel, your fillings and your jaw joint. If you are waking with a sore jaw or headaches at the temples, that is worth an appointment.
I want a second opinion on a treatment plan from somewhere else. Will you look at it?
Yes, and we would rather you asked than quietly went ahead with something you were not sure about. Bring the written plan and, if you can, the x-rays — you are entitled to a copy of your own records. We will tell you what we would do and why, including when we agree with the original plan, which happens often. A second opinion is a normal part of medicine and no reasonable practitioner is offended by one.
How long do veneers actually last?
Porcelain veneers typically run ten to fifteen years, sometimes longer, and composite veneers five to seven. What ends them is usually not the porcelain failing but the tooth underneath — decay at the margin, or gum recession exposing the join. They are not a one-off purchase; budget for replacement at some point. Anyone promising a lifetime result is overselling it.
Do you take HBF?
We claim through HICAPS, which every major fund including HBF works with, so you swipe your card and pay only the gap. What varies is the rebate, which depends on your level of extras cover and how much of your annual limit is left. If you want to know precisely what you will pay before you book, ring us for the item numbers and give them to HBF — they will tell you the exact rebate on your policy.
Is Koorana Road easy to find from Sorrento?
Straightforward. North on West Coast Drive along the coast, right onto Mullaloo Drive, then left onto Koorana Road — we are past the shops on the right. About five minutes. Free parking outside the practice, and the street itself is unrestricted.
