A Dentist Eight Minutes From the Joondalup CBD
Joondalup has plenty of dental chairs inside the city centre — and a car park to fight for at every one of them. Mullaloo Beach Dental sits eight minutes west on Koorana Road, with off-street parking at the door and appointment slots that work around shift rosters at the Health Campus and semester timetables at ECU.

Why Joondalup Patients Drive Out to the Coast
Joondalup is the commercial heart of Perth's north. Around 30,000 people pass through the city centre on a working day between Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City, the Joondalup Health Campus, Edith Cowan University and the courts and council offices on Boas Avenue. That density is great for retail and terrible for a lunchtime dental appointment — you spend as long circling a multi-storey car park as you do in the chair.
Most of our Joondalup patients found us for exactly that reason. Eight minutes on Shenton Avenue and Mullaloo Drive puts you at a small coastal practice where you park at the door, walk in, and are seen at the time you booked. For a routine check-up and clean that turns a 90-minute errand into a 45-minute one.
The second reason is scheduling. Joondalup Health Campus runs three shifts a day, and nursing and allied health staff make up a real share of our morning list. We open the chairs at 8:00am so a night-shift finisher can get seen on the way home, and we keep late-afternoon slots for the people starting at 7:00pm. If you work a rotating roster, tell us on the phone and we will book the pattern that suits rather than the next free slot.
You park at the door, walk in, and get seen at the time you booked — which is not the Joondalup CBD experience.

The Treatments Joondalup Patients Ask For Most
Every service we offer is available to you. These three come up most often in conversations with patients travelling from the city centre.
01Check-ups and Cleans
The six-monthly exam, scale and clean, and any x-rays that are due. Most Joondalup patients book these as a standing appointment so the reminder does the remembering — and so the visit lands inside a health fund calendar year while the extras limit is still there.
02Same-Day Emergency Appointments
Joondalup Health Campus has an emergency department but no dental service, so a cracked molar or an abscess that lands you there ends with painkillers and a referral. Call us first — we hold time each morning and afternoon specifically for pain.
03Digital Scans and Same-Visit Planning
Intraoral scanning replaces the tray of impression material, which matters if you gag easily. It also means we can show you the problem tooth on screen rather than describing it, and plan crowns and aligners without a second appointment for moulds.
What It Costs and How the Claiming Works
Dental fees in WA are not set by Medicare, so every practice prices differently and no two health funds rebate the same amount. Here is how we keep it predictable.
- HICAPS terminal on site — swipe your fund card and pay only the gap, no claim forms
- A written treatment plan with item numbers before any work beyond an exam begins
- Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) accepted for eligible children — we check your child's balance for you
- DVA cardholders welcome under the standard arrangements
- Payment plans available for larger treatment such as implants or crowns
- Item numbers on request so you can pre-check your rebate with your fund
Call (08) 9401 8060 with your fund name and we will tell you the item numbers before you book, so there are no surprises at the front desk.
Questions Joondalup Patients Actually Ask Us
The real ones, taken from phone calls and first appointments.
I work at Joondalup Health Campus on rotating shifts. Can I get an appointment that fits?
Yes, and it is worth telling us your roster pattern when you call rather than just taking the next available slot. We open at 8:00am Monday to Thursday, which suits people coming off a night shift, and our last appointments run to 5:00pm (4:00pm Friday). If you know your roster a few weeks out we can book several visits at once against the days you are off.
Is it really faster to drive to Mullaloo than to see a dentist in the Joondalup CBD?
Door to chair, usually yes. The drive is about eight minutes each way on Shenton Avenue, and you park directly outside the practice at no cost. In the city centre the drive is shorter but you are adding car park entry, a lift, and a walk at both ends. Patients who made the switch tell us the total time is similar or better, and the parking is the part they actually noticed.
My child goes to school in Joondalup and gets seen by the School Dental Service. Do they still need a private dentist?
The WA School Dental Service does a solid job of screening and basic care, but it runs on a school-term cycle and it does not cover everything — orthodontic assessment, trauma from a knock at sport, or a problem that appears in the school holidays. Many families use both: the school van for the routine screen, and us for anything that cannot wait or falls outside the scheme. If your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, that funding can be used here too.
I am an ECU student without private health cover. What does a first visit cost?
A first visit is an examination, and we will tell you the fee for that when you book — there is no charge for asking. If anything is found, you get a written plan with item numbers before we do the work, so you can decide what to do now and what to defer. Students without extras cover often start with the exam and clean and stage anything else across a few months.
I chipped a tooth on the weekend. Should I go to the Joondalup Health Campus emergency department?
Only if there is facial swelling that is spreading, bleeding you cannot stop, or a suspected jaw fracture — those are genuine hospital problems. For a chipped or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or toothache, the emergency department cannot treat it. They will manage your pain and tell you to see a dentist. Call us on (08) 9401 8060 first thing Monday and we will find you a slot that day.
Do you take my health fund?
We claim through HICAPS, which covers every major Australian fund — HBF, Medibank, Bupa, HCF, NIB and the rest. You swipe your card at the desk and pay only the difference. What varies is how much your particular fund pays back, since that depends on your level of extras cover and how much of your annual limit you have used. Bring your card and we will show you the rebate on the terminal before you pay.
How far ahead do I need to book a check-up?
For a routine check-up and clean, plan on a couple of weeks, and longer in November and December when everyone remembers their extras limit resets on 31 December. Emergencies are different — we keep slots aside each day for pain, so call in the morning rather than booking online if something hurts.
Can our whole family come in on the same trip from Joondalup?
Yes, and we would rather you did — one drive instead of three. Tell us how many people and their ages when you call and we will block consecutive appointments. With young children we usually schedule the adults first so the kids can watch, which takes most of the mystery out of it.
